Estimation of canopy nitrogen content in winter wheat from Sentinel-2 images for operational agricultural monitoring

چکیده

Abstract Canopy nitrogen content (CNC, kg/ha) provides crucial information for site-specific crop fertilization and the usability of Sentinel-2 (S2) satellite data CNC monitoring at high levels in managed agricultural fields is still underexplored. Winter wheat samples were collected France Belgium 2017 (n = 126) 2018 18), analysed S2-spectra extracted sample locations. A comparison three established remote sensing methods to retrieve was carried out: (1) look-up-table (LUT) inversion canopy reflectance model PROSAIL, (2) Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) (3) nitrogen-sensitive vegetation indices (VI). The spatial temporal transferability new rigorously assessed. PROSAIL-LUT approach predicted with a root mean squared error 33.9 kg/ha on dataset slightly larger value 36.8 dataset. Contrary, PLSR showed an 27.9 kg N/ha (R2 0.52) calibration (2017) but substantially 38.4 independent (2018). VIs revealed errors than results much higher validation (> 50 kg/ha). PROSAIL more stable robust VI when applied data. obtained maps may support farmers adapting their management according actual status.

Estimation of Nitrogen Vertical Distribution by Bi-Directional Canopy Reflectance in Winter Wheat

Timely measurement of vertical foliage nitrogen distribution is critical for increasing crop yield and reducing environmental impact. In this study, a novel method with partial least square regression (PLSR) and vegetation indices was developed to determine optimal models for extracting vertical foliage nitrogen distribution of winter wheat by using bi-directional reflectance distribution funct...

Using the Red-edge Bands on Sentinel-2 for Retrieving Canopy Chlorophyll and Nitrogen Content

Sentinel-2 is planned for launch in 2013 and it is equipped with the Multi Spectral Instrument (MSI), which will provide images with high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution. It incorporates two new spectral bands in the red-edge region, which can be used to derive red-edge type of vegetation indices. These are particularly suitable for deriving estimates of canopy chlorophyll and nitroge...

Remote Estimation of Leaf and Canopy Water Content in Winter Wheat with Different Vertical Distribution of Water-Related Properties

This study analyzed the vertical distribution of gravimetric water content (GWC), relative water content (RWC), and equivalent water thickness (EWT) in winter wheat during heading and early ripening stages, and evaluated the position of leaf number at which Vegetation Indexes (VIs) can best retrieve canopy water-related properties of winter wheat. Results demonstrated that the vertical distribu...

Volumetric soil moisture estimation using Sentinel 1 and 2 satellite images

Surface soil moisture is an important variable that plays a crucial role in the management of water and soil resources. Estimating this parameter is one of the important applications of remote sensing. One of the remote sensing techniques for precise estimation of this parameter is data-driven models. In this study, volumetric soil moisture content was estimated using data-driven models, suppor...
